He becomes jealous of Aron when his father favored his brother over him.

In East of Eden, Caleb is similar to his mother, who was a prostitute. Later, Charles also injures himself and receives a scar, similar to Cain’s sin mark.Īdam’s and Cathy’s first son named Caleb depicts Cain in the bible both with his personality and strong jealousy for his brother. Therefore, Charles became jealous of his brother and ends up beating him up. Their father Cyrus favored Adam’s gift of a puppy over Charles’ expensive knife. When Adam and Charles were young, they each gave their father birthday presents. Adam also had a brother similar to Cain named Charles. For example, Adam in East of Eden didn’t know about Cathy’s prostitution life, and Adam from the bible was oblivious of sins. They are also both mildly oblivious about situations happening.

Both Adam’s are kind-hearted and good-natured. Although they both commit sins, Cathy seems to disregard her actions, while Eve gets punished for them.Ĭathy’s husband Adam is similar to Adam from the bible. Cathy commits sins by being a prostitute, while Eve committed a sin by trusting the serpent and eating an apple. The character named Cathy is similar to Eve from the bible because she is prone to committing sins. As a result, Cain murdered Abel and lied to God about it. Cain became jealous of his brother Abel when God accepted his gifts, while rejecting Cain’s. Cain was a farmer, while Abel was a shepherd. The theme of good versus evil also is evident in both the Cain and Abel story and East of Eden.Īccording to the bible, Cain and Abel were two brothers whose parents were Adam and Eve. Like Cain and Abel, Cathy and Adam’s children named Caleb and Aron coincide with bible story. Adam also has a brother similar to Cain named Charles, who becomes jealous when their father favors Adam’s birthday present over Charles.

The first characters who have this relationship are Cathy, a deceiving prostitute who is similar to Eve, and Adam, a kindhearted father who is like Adam from the bible. This novel follows characters who are similar to Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel, and shows the overall relationships between them. This novel is an example of intertextuality because the plot is based on the biblical stories of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel. In high school, I was required to read an intertextuality novel known as East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
